Ravenscry is an Italian five piece that dabbles in female fronted gothic tinged metal, a la Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, and probably a dozen other bands that you’ve already heard before. Their debut self-titled EP is the band’s first foray into an already crowded genre, in the hopes that they’ll stand out among the crowd. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.
First, the good – Vocalist Giulia has a phenomenal vocal presence. She’s got a dynamic vocal range that’s both powerful and smooth at the same time, and almost makes this EP worthwhile. “Redemption I – Rainy” is a solo piece featuring only Giulia and some programmed orchestration behind her – it’s clean, it’s intriguing, and it’s the best song of the batch. Why? I’ll get to that next.
The not so good – Everything else about the EP is bland and forgettable. You’ve heard these riffs before, and you’ve heard them performed with better execution. The opening track “Nobody” begins with some potential, featuring some industrial/techno-lite elements that could have been exploited into something original. But then the big, detuned guitars walk in the door and things just get dumb. Boring chugga, chugga riffs that would make Linkin Park proud are apparently all that the band is willing to offer, which is disappointing. Five songs later, and the only feeling that I’m left with is one of wasted potential.
With so many other bands playing in a similar vein (and doing it better), it’s hard to recommend Ravenscry. If you’re a big fan of this style, or you think that having a hot, Italian centerpiece is worth the price of admission, then go nuts – you know what you’re getting. Beyond that, you’ll likely want to pass this one by.
