Quest For Fire
Lights From Paradise
April 2011
Released: 2010, n/a
Rating: 2.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

Toronto stoner rockers Quest for Fire have been making quite a name for themselves lately. Their 2009 self-titled debut successfully got their name out there as a band to watch, and now this album from last year has been knocking seemingly everyone over – seriously, I have yet to see a bad review of this album. That fact, along with the band sharing my Canadian heritage left me with some pretty damn high expectations when I first listened to this album.

Sadly, my experience with LIGHTS FROM PARADISE has been nothing but overwhelming boredom. I typically love stoner rock but after several listens, I just can’t find much to love about this release. For me, the problem is that the album tends to follow what I consider to be the worst path in stoner music – the long, dicking around songs that go nowhere. It takes a ton of song writing talent for a band to be able to make long spacey jams interesting, and Quest for Fire just isn’t that good. Granted, when the band does get around to rocking, the do it with conviction and class but all in all I was bored to tears by this album.

All that being said, I know I’m in the minority opinion on this one. So if you’re into stoner rock at all, you probably should give Quest for Fire a chance.
