Essentially a side project of KIRIATH drummer Andrew Millar PATRONS OF THE ROTTING GATE is an almost one man band with the Belfast sticksman performing all duties other than some additional guitars. These are handled by fellow KIRIATH band member Adam Irwin. Credit where credit is due, because from starting this project to getting the first full album out in less than a year is some achievement. You might think that it would sound rushed and just a bit forced but nothing could be further from the truth. ‘The Rose Coil’ might be a step too far even for some black metal fans but the way it has been written and constructed is excellent.
Dealing with subjects such as existentialism, psychology and in particular atheism it’s pretty clear Millar needed an outlet outside of his regular band duties. With an album this overbearingly visceral I do wonder how much that living in his troubled city influenced the writing process. You can almost sense the tension he gets into some of the songs, most notably ‘Carnassial’ which borders on the experimental without falling into any ego trap. As you’d expect the drumming is top class if a mite simplistic in places. Elsewhere the instruments are played well without getting past functional. The real bonus are the truly menacing vocals which sound like they came straight from Hell itself.
The clever part of ‘The Rose Coil’ is the way it is written and assembled. You get layer upon layer of sound which gives anyone playing it no choice but to really listen and concentrate on it. A case of the whole adding up to more than the sum of the parts. Unfortunately there are a few tracks that never really get going. There are three around the minute mark that offer little even by way of any link or intro and as such devalue the album as a whole. When that bold production does work though, and the music has time to work its magic,it is a true beast. On ‘Pride In Descent’ everything comes together in a kind of orchestra of the damned. You can imagine it being used on a particularly gory horror movie. This is certainly boundary pushing stuff and a good opening gambit even with the odd misfire. One for hardened black metal aficionados.
