Released: 2005, Metal Blade Records
Paths of Possession was originally started in 1999 by Richard Brunelle (ex- Morbid Angel guitarist), Randy Butman, and Jay Fossen. They released their first full-length in 2000 entitled LEGACY IN ASHES, then released an E.P. called THE CRYPTS OF MADNESS. After 5 years they are back with PROMISES IN BLOOD with George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher (Cannibal Corpse) on vocals, and Jack Goodwin replacing Brunelle on guitar. Paths of Possession definitely do not sound like Cannibal; they garner more of a Swedish melodic death/Bay Area thrash sound. Of course, we already know what Corpsegrinder sounds like, so that is the only real comparison to CC.
Excellent production on PROMISES IN BLOOD, due to the band working with Erik Rutan (Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal) at his Mana Studios. This is some great metal with very (and I mean VERY!) catchy riffs here. Not overly technical, but just right for their style. Nick Goodyear is an excellent drummer with great foot speed and his dynamics make him fun to listen to.
It is really cool to hear Corpsegrinder in another not-so-brutal band. At some points sounding like Six Feet Under with George on vocals, his screams haven’t changed too much from what we know of his previous work with Monstrosity and Cannibal Corpse, yet there are some higher ranged passages on PROMISES IN BLOOD that aren’t so reminiscent of CC.
The awesome cover artwork done by Kris Verwimp, makes you want to sell your soul to hell! Paths of Possession do a good job of giving each song its own kind of identity and memorable quality. Overall, a very cool listen I would recommend this one to fans of brutal death and traditional heavy metal even though there were, and are, many skeptics of this project. Due to Corpsegrinder’s involvement with Cannibal Corpse, I don’t think a Paths of Possession world tour will be happening any time soon unless, they tour with CC…if George’s vocal chords could handle it, of course.
Go on! Give them a try! You’re bound to be pleasantly surprised!
