Past The Fall
Beggars At The Liars Banquet
Released: 2013, Self Released
London’s Past The Fall is a youthful three-piece formed in 2011. Their debut EP, BEGGARS AT THE LIARS BANQUET, is an aggressive and heavy foray into thrash, groove, and death metal. Hitting at under 35 minutes and with seven tracks, the band quickly establishes a hybrid mix of Exodus and Obituary with traces of Pantera. Vocals are reminiscent of early Celtic Frost through most verses, and slightly cleaner tones in the choruses. Collectively, it all adds up to pummeling but mostly mid-paced mosh metal.
Expectedly, one of the heaviest and fastest tunes is offered as the opener, “Behind The Lies” containing some classic riffing and melodic soloing. Vocalists/bass guitarist Will Wright’s vocals straddle the line between death and thrash and are a ways back in the mix. “Beyond Existence” opens with more atmosphere and dark tones, recalling NIGHTFALL – era Candlemass, before kicking into a driving rhythm. “Heart Spoken” is an acoustic song with rhythm section added in, reminiscent of “Kaiowas” from Sepultura and following a similar path.
One unquestioned positive are the absolutely crushing tones, particularly in the guitar, but the production overall is bruising and clear. Another is the band’s willingness to experiment and unplug occasionally, offering some contrast and variety to the chugs. Wright’s vocals are sorta an acquired taste though, not a style that immediately grabbed me, but not bad. With only seven songs, it is a bit perplexing that the band offers up two instrumentals, which consume about 25% of the albums running time. Chief flaw though are songs that are mostly unable to establish an immediate and lasting connection.
Past The Fall has some awesome ideas and riffs, but many of the songs blend together into a uniform sounding collection that offers little to distinguish one track from the next. Nevertheless, the potential and attitude along with the solid production values will serve as assets to the band moving forward. Fans of Obituary, Celtic Frost, Exodus and Pantera will find a kindred Spirit in Past The Fall.
