Far Beyond The Southern Cowboy’s Vulgar Hits
October 2003
Released: 2003, Elektra
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: JP

This is more of a service announcement than a real in-depth review. Elektra and Rhino (a division of Warner Strategic Marketing Group…let that sink in for sec) have released a contractual obligation of Pantera’s greatest hits from the 90’s.

Sixteen tracks spread over the major label years this disc offers no new, or unreleased material. There are two rarer tracks, ‘Hole In The Sky’ from the Japanese version of REINVENTING THE STEEL, and ‘Cat Scratch Fever’, the Ted Nugent cover from the Detroit Rock City movie soundtrack. The rest of the picks are predictable but essential with only one cut ‘Drag The Waters’ from THE GREAT SOUTHERN TRENDKILL.

It’s decent job in terms of presentation with a really bad collage style cover. The 16-page booklet is very well done, tons of photos, liner notes, chart positions and the obligatory gushing fan-boy essay this time from Don Kaye. At least he does explain that Pantera had four previous albums that are not represented on this disc.

What is cool is the bonus 12 track DVD of Pantera videos, re-affirming my long held position that Pantera really were the darlings of MTV and Billboard with so many hit albums and videos. This whole comp falls into that nice zone where the die-hards who buy everything will want it, casual fans who don’t want to buy all the 90’s studio stuff will want it and guys like me (who bought all those releases on tape) will want it as it nicely encapsulates the career of the one of the longest running, best-selling and most influential modern metal bands of the 90’s.
