Primus
Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People
November 2003
Released: 2003, Interscopr
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: JP

Now this is really cool. Primus are back. Having a long and prolific career that has been respected (although not necessarily embraced, let alone understood) by the metal community, Primus are back after what seems like a long hiatus but was really only three years. Original drummer Tim Alexander is back in the band and the label saw fit to release this five song EP of all new material plus a bonus DVD.

The main attraction in my mind as a fan is the new material. Sure the DVD is almost three hours long with almost everything you could ever want including 13 videos, backstage footage, documentary, discography, and tons of extras BUT…new songs are better.

This beautiful double disc has the almost requisite odd title, clay dudes for graphics, a nice essay, good design and layout, lyrics, the whole nine-yards. The songs are pure Primus. The relatively straight-ahead (by Primus standards) opening cut ‘The Carpenter and the Dainty Bride’ recall some of the punch that has found them crossover appeal. ‘Pilcher’s Squad’ is a short history lesson and the heaviest track on the EP. The production, and patented bass sound are naturally, fully intact. This EP sound big and loud and fun.

Five top-notch, new songs in a gorgeous package and 3 hours of Primus on DVD this is a winner in every respect. A worthy addition to the collection of any Primus fan or a great introduction to anyone who has ever wondered, ‘What the hell are these guys all about?’
