January 2005
Released: 2004, Scarlet/The End Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Gabriel C. Zolman

Produced by Helloween’s Tommy Hansen, this release is an outstanding exception to an over-wrought, cliché-ridden genre. Though essentially a triumphant-sounding power metal band at heart, Platitude has a unique progressive bent that seems to qualify it more for the Dream Theater crowd, than for fans of, say, Primal Fear. Ultimately, fans of Lost Horizon and newer Labyrinth will find much to like about this release. While the keyboards are straight out of Kevin Moore’s songbook, and the vocals often reach a Yes-like pitch and wail, the crunching rhythms, complex solos and drum patterns, and swift pacing of the music will endear this to listeners wary of anything too “prog.”

Many readers may have developed an aversion to the power metal genre due to the pure cheese and lack of substance exhibited by many of its key players, but this is a release worth pursuing by virtue of its sheer heaviness and virtuoso playing. Although the songs themselves can be a little too complex for their own good, the album’s shorter numbers are as good as anything Fates Warning ever did; and for seasoned fans of power-prog, that’s as good a compliment as a band of this sub-genre can receive.
