The Best Of Poison: 20 Years of Rock
Released: 2006, Capitol/EMI Records
Reviewer: Celtic Bob
Hard to believe it has been 20 years since I first heard LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN. In that time they have toured pretty well every year while releasing albums sporadically. A couple of the releases may not have sold as well as the earlier ones but fans still went out in droves and supported them even during the departure of CC.
The 18 tracks found on this disc sound crisp and clean. In some places it sounds as if they were slightly remixed as you hear little things that you never heard before. One such incident is at the end of “I Want Action”, you hear a different background vocal/bit at the very end that you don’t recall hearing in the many times you listened to it before. Despite being another “Hits” package the songs still sound fresh and new and not the least bit dated. This is pure good time rock and roll.
Featured on this collection is their cover of the Kiss classic “Rock and roll All Night” which originally appeared on the now hard to find LESS THAN ZERO soundtrack. There is one ‘new’ track here: a cover of grand Funk’s “We’re An American Band”. In true Poison fashion Bret does a small bit of ad-lib in the song just to make it his own.
A great collection of songs that will replace your well worn copy of GREATEST HITS 86-96. Call them Glam Metal, Hair Metal…whatever, but you cannot deny the quality and timelessness of their music. Hopefully we’ll see allot more new and original material from this party rock band.
