Popoff, Martin
GOLDMINE HEAVY METAL RECORD PRICE GUIDE (Book Review)
January 2002
Released: 1999, Krause Publications
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: JP

Both of my book reviews for the Library of Loudness this month are going to be of interest to older fans, audiophiles, collectors and fans of vinyl. Both books are non-fiction encyclopedia style pieces based on the world of heavy metal vinyl.

First up the Goldmine price guide by famed Canadian author Martin Popoff.

Without trying to sound like a gushing fan, this guide really does have it all.

Popoff has left no stone unturned in his meticulous detailing of metal rarities from the late 60’s through to the early 90’s when vinyl fell from grace.

It is not so much the straight lists of vinyl and the encyclopedia format that is impressive as much as all the little extras. For starters the book comes with an 18 track CD courtesy of Metal Blade records. It has some nice treats to listen to while you browse through this 360 page book. There are a few notes about each track to provide some historical perspective.

The book includes a cool interview with Brian Slagel of Metal Blade records and a cool interview with Jess Cox of Neat Records, both industry founders of the modern metal movement. There are several appendices and introductory comments including Martin’s Top 300 Metal albums of all time and a useful guide to grading your vinyl and the methodology used in determining values.

Martin’s verbose and unique style is found scattered throughout this magnificent encyclopedia with sly comments inserted here and there both thought provoking and insightful, even if you don’t agree with the sentiment of the comments. The only complain it might lodge was that Martin choose to separate EP’s and LP’s. I would have preferred a straight chronological format to maintain the integrity of the discography but that is a minor complaint at best. This guide is also an accurate, technical achievement, there are almost no mistakes, errors or omissions…this beast was meticulously researched!

If you are worried about reading 350+ pages of text..fear not! There are an amazing number of photos in this book. There are probably 200+ photos of very cool, very rare heavy metal album covers, incredible rarities that are a delight to behold. The format is simple keeping only to the basics…Year, country, and a few notes on oddities and of course a pretty fair assessment of market values for collectors.

If you are a metal archivist like me or a vinyl collector this guide is truly essential. Another triumph for Metal’s most prolific scribe.
