Full Blown - 5 song EP/demo
Released: 1998, Independent
Don't tell these babes that chicks can't rock...unless you want your ass kicked!! haha... Not having heard from this band since the late 80's early 90's I was very surprised to learn that they are still together and still rockin'. There have been some member changes but by the sounds of it it's all for the best. They have dropped the "glamish" Barbie look and now sound and look more like a melodic hard rock band with a lot of guitar crunch and a thick bottom end. The best tracks on this demo are the upbeat "Chance on You" and the darker "My Turn." This music is actually not that bad if you're into "hard rock." My tastes happen to lean a lot more to the metallic side of the coin but this is actually somewhat likeable and if you're into hard rock then you should check Phantom Blue out. It's cool that the band hasn't taken on any of the 90's grunge sounds or changed to capitalize on a trend.
While there are chicks out there who are more metal orientated (i.e. the way cool vocalist for Sinergy, and Karyn Crisis - the multi-faceted vocalist for the band Crisis) not many all girl bands exist in the hard rock world. The vocals although melodic, clear and on key are missing one ingredient...the "oomph" that could help make this more than a hard rock band and make it METAL! Lyrically this band doesn't get too deep - at least not on the song called "Cookie" - "Can I lay my cookies on your sack?" (Come on with it!! I don't know about you but my mind's in the gutter!!!) You've got to give the ladies credit though, in a scene dominated by male bands they have been together for 10 years, the last three of which they have won the "Best All-Female Rock Group" award from the Rock City Music Awards. I doubt they have much competition...maybe Drain STH? That is, if you like an all female version of Alice In Chains. Visit http://www.phantomblue.com
