The multitalented, multi-instrumentalist, genius, legend and one of the leading metal names in Sweden—Peter Tägtgren—is back with his sideproject called Pain. I think that most of you already know Peter by his ordinary band, Hypocrisy, who released a new album during 2004 called THE ARRIVAL. He is also the new singer in the Bloodbath project, which released their second album in the middle of 2004. Peter, together with his brother Tommy, also own the very famous Abyss Studio where many of the Swedish and international metal elite have recorded their albums. Hypocrisy have been out touring during most of this year but now Peter has time to release his new album with Pain. It’s only Peter who is Pain, he does everything including writing the material, does the production and mixing and records everything in his own studio. All the instruments are handled by Peter and he stands for all the singing, as well.
Peter is about to follow up his recent album, NOTHING REMAINS THE SAME from 2002, with this CD-Single which includes one track from the new album and one bonus track which is not featured on the album. Pain sounds pretty different from Peter’s ordinary band, as it is somewhat commercial-sounding industrial metal with electronics and barbwire-sharp guitarplay.
“Same Old Song” is a really good mix of industrial metal and razor-sharp guitarplay combined with a lot of electronics. It sounds like Peter has used strings here, too. The lead vocals are at the top of the mix and he sings with an ordinary voice compared to what he sounds like in Bloodbath or Hypocrisy. This song has absolute potential to become a real chart breaker. Then we have the bonus track, “Trapped,” that’s not featured on the album and is much harder and faster than “Same Old Song” but Peter still lies at the top with his lead vocals, while he gets help in the chorus by choirs.
This is a great preview of what we can expect of the new album. The only thing I have a problem with is the rapping Peter does in the middle of “Same Old Song.” Otherwise, Peter impresses big time (as always) and this should appeal to any fan of Pain. The album is scheduled to be released at the end of January in Europe with Peter doing a European tour in January/February.
