For Your Eyes Only
Released: 2000, Independent
It seems that Sweden have been turning out more than melodic death metal and power metal. Seems Payback have taken a page out of the music book of the United States by creating a CD that has more in common with what is happening on this side of the Atlantic than in the metal breeding grounds of Europe. Payback is made up of Demis Skoupras on vocals, Daniel Paulsson: guitars, Mattian Nilsson: drums and Niklas Ankarbrandt on bass. The sound of the band is heavy on the Soulfly and Machinehead influences.
The CD kicks off with "Evil 2000" which is about what else? Evil! "Welcome to My World" is a story about the personal choice to do cocaine. "I hit another line and I go blind I lose myself into a place inside" just about says it all. The solo on this song shows that Paulsson can wail on the guitar if he chooses. "Beat You at Your Own Game" has a riff reminiscent of Soulfly’s "Bleed". Skoupras just belts out the angst ridden vocals on this track. The disc closes out with an acoustic track titled "What Motivates A Man". Skoupras whispers his emotionally frustrated vocals to a simple guitar track.
Payback fall in amongst all the new bands that are becoming the "in thing" in North America. They tread a fine line and almost go over it and become one of the legions of rap bands that is flooding the market. Thankfully they are a little on the heavier side than most of those bands and have a more hardcore vocal approach than rap. Still they till sound a little too much like many of the generic bands that are flooding the scene at the moment.
