Single Sickened Cell
February 2005
Released: 2005, Beauty & Pain Productions
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Gabriel C. Zolman

Omei? Oh my! These are stark, blackened electrospheres for the grizzled, twisted circuits of Satan’s android elite. For fans of Brighter Death Now, Megaptera, Raision D’Etre, and the like, there is little here for the traditional hard music cliques, but perhaps the more drug-addled Godflesh-loving Industrial Nation types will find this future-shockfest of interest. Actually, much like the excellent Permanent Frost, Blood Box, and In Slaughter Natives releases of late, this would make superb ritual musick for the magick-minded magus, weary of mere metal, but leery of Psychic TV.

In some ways, the aforementioned Genesis P-Orridge project is a half-decent starting point to understanding this sort of thing. It is ambient; it is harsh. It is not for the faint of heart.

The tracks cascade back and forth, as one is lulled in and out of consciousness. As is standard of the genre, there are not “songs” per se, but rather elaborate compositions. (Really, is modern Metalcore any better?) Given that Century Media Distro has picked this up, it is time to shed a spotlight on an up and coming scene—and if the above-par product of labels such as D-Trash, Ethedrone, Beauty & Pain, and Eibon Records is any indication, the “sinister ambient” subgenre is poised to lull us all into the Devil’s very Hell.

It all begins with a single, sickened cell; it ends in a padded room.
