Order of Nine
Of Once and Future Kings
January 2002
Released: 2002, Nightmare Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Rick

Originally going by the name Templar, Order of Nine has been around since 1998. They have appeared on a tribute to Queensryche and on a Hellion Records compilation CD. They have also released a CD called A TOUCH OF WINTER’S DISCONTENT which pt the bans name on the map. Now they are back with OF ONCE AND FUTURE KINGS, a slab of progressively influenced traditional metal. Nightmare records has singed a distribution deal with the band to get this Cd out to the metal masses and I think that was very good choice because they fit well with the bands on their roster. The lineup is Michael DeGrena: vocals, Michael Chiccitt: guitars, Mike Sirera: percussion and Steve Rabinovich; bass.

I have given this CD a couple of spins and it has grown on me. In the 80s this would have been considered all out prog metal in the same vein as Queensryche and Crimson Glory. Though I wouldn’t say they sound like either band, they fit in that niche. The same one occupied today by Jacob’s Dream of whom they remind me quite a bit. Songs like “Dream Thieve” and “November 1st” are great up-tempo tracks while “Nameless 2000” and “The Hidden Beyond” and more laid back and atmospheric. “Last Impressions” leaves me with the feeling that this would be what The Doors would sound like if they were a metal band.

I listened to this Cd about 10 times at work and found something new each time. Order of Nine strikes me as a band waiting to break out. The material on this CD is excellent but I feel a greatness brewing under the surface. Only time will tell. Till then check out this CD and join the Order of Nine.
