You'd have to have had both your eyes gouged out with a hot poker to miss the irony in Origin's latest opus being released in the same month as the withered embarrassment that was Morbid Angel's comeback. Certainly the storyline reads like the classic passing of the (death metal) torch. Then again, as much as Origin have been celebrated for their unfettered brutality on records past, they were never quite seen as contenders to the throne. At least until now.

Something is definitely up from the moment that "Explosion Of Fury" launches itself out of the speakers. Picking up where the Kansas natives left off on 2008's ANTITHESIS, the pace is frenetic and the technicality almost inhuman. But where the band - who now operate as a trio (at least in the studio) following the departure of Jeremy Turner - were once rightly accused of being one-trick ponies, they quickly set a marker on ENTITY, intimating a wholesale overhaul in the songwriting department. And damned, if they haven't done a spectacular job of it. Each of ENTITY's eleven tracks not only bristles with their hallmark unhinged aggression, but they're now producing genuinely memorable songs to boot. For a prime example of this, you need look no further than "Conceiving Death", a masterclass in death metal riffing and dynamics; a track that constantly keeps you guessing, whilst branding its imprint on your mind irrevocably.

The disc's production is stellar, every performance is fantastic and for nigh on fourth minutes, Origin appear incapable of doing anything wrong. Death metal aficionados - welcome to this year's ALTARS OF MADNESS. As for the so-called legends of the genre, your notice has been well and truly served.
