Orange Goblin
Back From The Abyss
December 2014
Released: 2014, Candlelight Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

After a quiet period at the end of the 2000’s, elder statesmen Orange Goblin returned with a vengeance in 2012 with the excellent A EULOGY FOR THE DAMNED, followed by the accompanying live album a year later. Now they’re back again with studio album number eight, ready to reassert their place on the top of the doom / stoner metal throne.

If you are fan of Orange Goblin’s brand of heavy stoner rock then BACK FROM THE ABYSS will be no surprise, just pure enjoyment. The band doesn’t materially tinker with their known sound but pays tribute to it, and their forebears. Hell, opening cut “Sabbath Hex” is basically a musical and lyrical tribute to Black Sabbath, so it’s not like the band is hiding their influences. It’s all good though because, as I said in my review of A EULOGY FOR THE DAMNED, this band just doesn’t make mistakes, they just write damn good songs. Within that, they play a little bit with their sound, like in the swashbuckling sound and tale of “Mythical Knives” or the two atmospheric instrumentals (“Titan”, “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”). The meat of the album comes with the expected stomping metal, with the likes of “The Devil’s Whip” and “Heavy Lies the Crown” kicking ass and getting heads banging.

Twenty years on and Orange Goblin continues to release high-quality music with no signs of letting up. BACK FROM THE ABYSS is as good as anything the band has ever done and is a “must buy” for fans for the band.
