Orange Goblin
A Eulogy For The Damned
March 2012
Released: 2012, Candlelight Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

I’m not sure why, but it feels like we’re a good five or six years past the height of fame (a relative term) of the stoner rock genre and it’s tough for me to think of “big” bands that are still left flying the flag. Sure, there are all kinds of lesser known bands out there (there always are), but something in the air (the bong smoke?) makes it feel like stoner rock is in a bit of a recession at the moment. I guess that’s why it feels, to me at least, that the release of a new Orange Goblin album is something of an event – these guys have been flying the tattered flag of stoners for almost 20 years and are one of the most respected bands around. Now these London stalwarts are back again, serving up their 7th dish of tasty bong water music.

I could end the review right here just by saying, yep, this is an Orange Goblin record, but that would be a disservice to the band. A EULOGY FOR THE DAMNED is a prime slice of stoner rock because Orange Goblin knows what their doing with regard to both song writing and track sequencing. The album cracks open with bold rockers to get your blood pumping, tosses in a menacing, slow-building crusher right when it’s needed (“The Fog”), and kick back into high gear again before closing off with the mellower, dreamy title track.

I mean c’mon man, this is a band that doesn’t make amateur mistakes; they have been treading the boards too long for that. It’s Orange Goblin, it’s stoner rock, get it.
