Nasty Surgeons
Exhumation Requiem
March 2017
Released: 2017, Xtreem Music
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

I like that they chose an adjective in their name that didn’t immediately conjure up gruesome grotesqueries - “Nasty” Surgeons instead of “Brutal” or “Sadistic” Surgeons. “Nasty” is a little more benign and open to interpretation; so, like it may not necessarily be a statement about their aptitude as medical professionals, but more about a character flaw? Maybe they pick their noses in public or leave a pile of dirty dishes in the sink for more than a couple of days. Or maybe they tell the occasional off color, randy joke while in the operating room, prompting one of the surgical nurses to respond “ewwww, you nasty, surgeon.”

Etymology aside, Nasty Surgeons are a Spanish quartet who as you may have inferred play Swede flavored gore metal in the vein of early Carcass, Exhumed, General Surgery and the other usual suspects. Their EXHUMATION REQUIEM debut doesn’t stray very far from terrain already explored, but still finds itself to be a capable collection of sonic atrocities.

What the Surgeons lack in originality, they make up for in pure hutzpah. As mentioned, the 10 tracks on EXHUMATION REQUIEM tend to tread familiar paths, but you can’t dismiss the level of energy and commitment that the band sweats into each song. “The Resurrectionist” opens with a spooky intro and flirts between full on Dismember sprints and chugging groove, the raging “Human Flesh is Also Food” seethes with animosity and murderous intent, while the title track weaves Chopin’s “Marche Funebre” into the fabric of flesh.

There are definitely open nods to the heroes from which they seek inspiration, almost sounding like a cover band and times – am I listening to PIECES, REEK OF PUTREFACTION, or GORE METAL?. But EXHUMATION REQUIEM is the perfect kind of record to spin when you just want some rage in your speakers that you don’t have to think too hard about. If you dig the genre, Nasty Surgeons are worth checking out. Hopefully they can find more of their own voice on the next record.
