Ne Obliviscaris
The Aurora Veil
September 2007
Released: 2007, Self-released
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

So, here we have a 3-song ´demo´ that lasts approx. 34-minutes… Quite ambitious, might one say. Ne Obliviscaris comes from Melbourne, Australia - and the band has been around about 4 years, having even a drummer in the line-up that has won the Australian final of ´The World´s Fastest Drummer´ competition in Australia in 2006. That´s some sort of an achievement in itself, I guess.

Ne Obliviscaris´ music could be described as avantgard´ish and atmospheric Black Metal that is both relatively hard-hitting and obviously ambitious in many ways. Whenever one band tries to accomplish something extraordinary and unique musically, it´s of course one of those things that we should seriously appreciate and give some credit for. Ne Obliviscaris can surely be credited by making their avantgard´ish Black Metal quite a challenge for listeners. After 2-3 careful spinnings of this lengthy demo, it still feels like I cannot remember much out of it. There´s so much going on in their songs all the time that you start feeling pretty exhausted in the end. The band, however, has managed to create quite an interesting musical formula for themselves in which they can stretch their own musical ´perversions´ in as many possible (or even impossible) directions they want to - as much as they want to, without cramping themselves into one or two specific boxes. With many violin, clean vocal and acoustic guitar parts in the songs, Ne Obliviscaris also manage to create a welcomed contrast to a fast Black Metal shredding that is speeded up with Daniel´s extremely fast feet that does constantly intense blast-beats through the demo (he´s truly got a pair of fast feet, I can tell).

THE AURORA VEIL is a demo full of ambition and talent, which in the best scenario will lead them to a record contract with some established label. Hope for the best for them anyway - and hopefully I even succeed in sinking my teeth into their music a bit more in time.
