Nailbomb
Live At Dynamo (DVD)
July 2006
Released: 2006, Roadrunner Records
Rating: 1.5/5
Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland

Nailbomb was an industrial thrash side product of Sepultura’s Max Cavalera and Fudge Tunnel’s Alex Newport. The band recorded only one CD, POINT BLANK, in 1994 and did one live show at 1995’s Dynamo Open Air Festival in Eindhoven, Holland. That show, plagued with technical difficulties, was previously released on a largely forgettable, warts-and-all CD entitled PROUD TO COMMIT COMMERCIAL SUICIDE in 1995. Soon after playing Dynamo, Nailbomb split up and has remained inactive since, while Cavalera went on to release one more album with Sepultura (1996’s ROOTS) before forming Soulfly and Newport has remained out of the spotlight. For unknown reasons, Roadrunner Records has chosen to release the Dynamo show eleven years later on DVD under the uninspired title, LIVE AT DYNAMO. This DVD is as rough and bare as the PROUD TO COMMIT COMMERCIAL SUICIDE CD but at least there is now an agreeable video component to add to the lackluster sound.

At only 42 minutes, LIVE AT DYNAMO is a quick blast of Nailbomb’s punishingly cold music. POINT BLANK is an excellent album and worth checking out by a fan of either band or someone into industrial music that is filled with plenty of samples and razor-sharp guitars. On the live front, though, Nailbomb fails. In all fairness, this was the band’s first and only performance and the choice to immortalize that—and in front of tens of thousands of people—is a ballsy move to say the least, but at the same time, it is very difficult to recommend a DVD that is so technically flawed in the band’s performances. Newport appears continually frustrated at the mikes fading out, samples that are not synched properly and the extremely poor sound overall. On the other hand, Cavalera appears to take things in stride—he had Sepultura filling his wallet by day, after all—and his young son, Richie, performs third guitar at side stage and the band is later joined by Biohazard frontman (and future porn star) Evan Seinfeld on bass for “Sick Life.” For unexplained reasons, three drummers rotate behind the kit including Cavalera’s brother and Sepultura bandmate, Igor, and Dead Kennedy’s skinsman D.H. Peligro for an awkward cover of that band’s “Police Truck.” “Wasting Away” and “World of Shit” fare the best here but most of the songs are so badly recorded that LIVE AT DYNAMO is barely above bootleg level.

Nailbomb unleashed one massive studio album and probably should have left it at that. The live CD and now DVD are poor representations of what Nailbomb was about and it is painfully clear that the band cannot exist outside the studio. To get a clear idea of what Nailbomb sounds like, seek out POINT BLANK and forget LIVE AT DYNAMO even exists. This is for completists only.
