Nomad Son
First Light
March 2010
Released: 2008, Metal On Metal Records Rating: 3.5/5 Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen Nomad Son hails from Malta, playing doom metal. Strange or not, but the first thing that came to my mind automatically when knowing they come from Malta, was the doom gods Forsaken. At first I did not know how close my guess would possibly come. Nomad Son was put together in early 2006 by Albert Bell, the bassist of Forsaken, so I should have guessed. Nomad Son plays a traditional sounding doom metal on their debut album, FIRST LIGHT. In fact, I think I will not surprise to anyone of you if I told that Nomad counts musically on bands like Black Sabbath, Pentagram, Candlemass, Trouble and the like; all those traditional sounding doom metal bands that have a connection or two, to the 70s and 80s era of doom metal. So yeah, the influences are definitely there – and whether you like it or not, Nomad Son does not bring anything new to this genre, but they are still doing all that they need to do in order to offer a great and mature sounding record to the world of doom metal. Who of us would not love that warm, organic and smooth Hammond sound that they have also incorporated into this opus (Deep Purple and Uriah Heep anyone?)? Nomad Son´s doom metal is well crafted thoroughly; it´s catchy and it´s rocking – and first and foremost, it makes you jam together with it. Vocalist Jordan Cutajar sounds really damn good, too. He sounds intense and passionate enough with his slightly nasal vocals in the songs, to make a very convincing impact on listeners. While the album´s opener “Forever Twilight” is heavily Candlemass inspired riff-wise, the last song “The Light at the End” is a peaceful, ethereal and pot-smelling hippie style of song that harks back to the times of Sabbath´s MASTER OF REALITY and VOL. 4 albums. Do I need to say more? I don´t think so. If you love traditional doom metal, then you don´t want to miss this album. ![]()
