Night Ranger
Hole in the Sun
May 2007
Released: 2007, Frontiers Records/Zink Music
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

After 9 years of silence, Night Ranger is back with not only its original line-up, but also a newcomer in the band: Michael Lardie from Great White on keyboards. Night Ranger have sold about 16 million albums worldwide and have hits like “Sister Christian”, “(You Can Still) Rock in America”, and “When You Close Your Eyes”. Melodic hard rock/melodic metal ought to be a good musical description of Night Ranger’s music. Their music is all about grand harmonies and heavy choruses along with some mean guitar parts.

HOLE IN THE SUN takes the listener out on a 12-track journey for 50 minutes. The material is strong and even all the way through. My personal favorite songs are “Tell Your Vision”, “Drama Queen”, “You’re Gonna Hear from Me”, and “White Knuckle Ride”, all of which are fast and heavy typical Night Ranger songs with brilliant guitar duels between Watson and Gillis. Jack Blades sounds as good as ever on vocals. We also have the melodic rock tracks “Whatever Happened”, “Rockstar”, “Hole in the Sun”, and “Wrap It Up”; and of course the power ballads “There is Life”, “Fool in Me”, “Being”, and “Revelation 4 a.m.”, which helps to lift the album up a notch. The band produced the album and they have managed to combine their special sound with a sound-picture for the 21st century in a beautiful way.

All fans of Night Ranger are not going to be disappointed and have a treat to look forward to with HOLE IN THE SUN. Personally, I’m not a hardcore fan of the band but I can truly like the band and the album anyway. It’s a strong comeback by Night Ranger and all fans can look forward to a live DVD, new electric and acoustic albums, and worldwide tour really soon.
