NightShade
Wielding The Scythe
December 2001
Released: 2001, Scarlet Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Arto Lehtinen

Hmm more new bands from Sweden. I may turn to sound a little bit sceptical, but I assume the Nightshade dudes gotta be involved in other bands as well or did I bark up the wrong tree ?!? But anyway let's take a rapid glance at the historical side of the band before getting into the deeper analyzation of the album. Formed as Northern Shadow, but then changed to Nightshade in January'96 and hailing from nearby Gothenburg... Haa did the bells start ringing between the ears about the possible metal style of what Nightshade might stand for ?! Yes and once again yes Nightshade definitely share the same playground along with the Gothenburg bands of which the whole local scene is known as New Wave of The Swedish Melodic Death Metal. I couldn't help starting compering Wielding The Scythe to other albums of that kind of the melo death genre for the first two albums by Dark Tranquillity and In Flames. For example in my ears vocalist Daniel Kvist sounds like a hybrid version of Mikael Stanna and Anders Friden. As far as the musical approach is concerned it's kinda more than too easy to link them to the same category along with these as already mentioned above bigger Gothenburg bands cos similarities are so obvious even though the band occasionally slips to the modern black metal side.

Not that bad, but not that uniquely mind blowing new from the area, but friends of the melo death stuff will treasure NightShade as a new hope of the Gothenburg scene.
