Night Ranger
High Road
September 2014
Released: 2014, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Waspman

30 years after their commercial peak (with the massive MIDNIGHT MADNESS album in 1983), the lifelong rockers in Night Ranger just keep on, keepin’ on. It’s clearly a love of the music that keeps this band going, as they’re brand of commercial hard rock hasn’t been popular for a long, long time. HIGH ROAD is the band’s 11th studio album, and first in three years.

I somewhat disagreed with my esteemed colleague JP’s assessment of the band’s last release, SOMEWHERE IN CALIFORNIA (feel free to check out his review!), as I found it a tired-sounding effort (he quite liked it). So I was quite pleased when the title track of this album blasted out through my headphones sounding bright, vibrant, and full of energy. Fortunately, the band manages to sustain that momentum throughout the entire album, packing it full of catchy songs, smooth vocals, and the band’s trademark fiery licks from Brad Gillis and Joel Hoekstra. There’s not a single song I would skip – heck, even the ballads are worth hearing. To make a long review short, all ‘80s rock fans will find something to love on this album.

HIGH ROAD definitely proved my assessment of the band as in decline WRONG, and I couldn’t be happier about it. All bands this long in the tooth should sound this alive and joyful.
