Neige et Noirceur
Hymnes de la Montagne Noire
August 2012
Released: 2011, Sepulchral Productions
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

The number of one man bands in Black Metal is reaching an alarming number, but Neige et Noirceur deliver the exact kind of filth-laden Black Metal that makes me want to get up in the morning.

Drawing his inspiration from the vast landscapes of Quebec, Spiritus unleashes an unholy cacophony of sound, cleverly intertwining it with haunting passages that offer brief respite in this unforgiving torture chamber of sound. This long and desolate journey takes the raw brutalness of Black Metal, but delivers it in a highly polished, almost catchy way, whilst avoiding the failings of bands like Satyricon who have taken their more recent, catchier sound too far.

Spiritus has taken his work in a new direction with Hymnes de la Montagne Noire, and the energy that seeps forth from this album leaves me confused as to whether I slap a smile on my face, or burn down a church!
