Mutant Squad
Social Misfits
May 2012
Released: 2012, Suspiria Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Infamousbutcher

Spain’s Mutant Squad have been playing old school 80s/early 90s thrash since 2007. Recently signed to Suspiria Records, Mutant Squad have released their second EP, SOCIAL MISFITS. A sign of a good metal EP is when it is finished you find yourself wishing there was more, and I felt that after listening to SOCIAL MISFITS. This is 4 solid tracks of thrash, groove, and even a bit of melody that will have you banging your head. It’s a great introduction to this band.

Things start off with “Black Harvest” a mid-paced thrasher with elements of Overkill and Testament with a bit of a groove to it. Vocalist Pla is like a cross between Prong’s Tommy Victor and a 90s James Hetfield (Metallica) but with more of a high range. Second track “Remember” is faster and evokes Megadeth and Metallica with its crunching riffs. Drumming and bass is ordinary but fits the music well. “The Machine” is more mid-level heaviness thrash, powerful but not blistering like Slayer. Clocking in at over 7 minutes, the centerpiece of the EP is “Cannon Fodder” with several tempo changes and some Sabbathy guitars in the middle and just a bit of melodic vocals. Nothing original here but this is a great mix of throwback thrash.

If you are looking for a thrash fix, check out SOCIAL MISFITS. I’m looking forward to Mutant Squad’s full length follow up.
