Night Eternal
August 2008
Released: 2008, SPV/Steamhammer/Border Music
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Portugal’s finest band is back for the attack with a new vicious album called NIGHT ETERNAL. The bands debut came out in 1994 and was an EP called UNDER THE MOONSPELL and was followed by the classic WOLFHEART. The band is now following up the 2007 release UNDER SATANAE which was a re-release of the bands old songs. This time the band has chosen to work with their old friend and producer Waldemar Sorychta who did pre-production in Lisbon before the band headed over to Denmark to record the album.

Moonspell all about dark and gloomy Goth metal with melancholy and sadness in perfect harmony. The guitar riffs are mean and nasty and the thick layers of keyboards help to create the perfect empty feeling. Guests on the album are Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex- The Gathering), Carmen Simoes (Ava Inferni) and Sofie Vieira (Cinemuerte).

All of the 9 songs are totally brilliant and highlights are “At Tragic Heights”, “Night Eternal”, “Moon In Mercury”, “Spring Of Rage”, “Shadow Sun”, “Scorpion Flower”, “Hers Is The Twilight”. They have found the right formula for their music and they know what to do with it in order to get the best possible out of it. This is a really strong album and Moonspell once again shows why they are one of the best bands in their genre. Both goth fans and fans of more aggressive metal can enjoy this.

Tue Madsen has done the production and just like everything else he’s done this production sounds brilliant. NIGHT ETERNAL is the perfect album for when autumn falls. Both older and newer fans can appreciate this album. Lead singer Ribeiro does an amazing job with the vocals and he both chants, screams and whisper his vocals. He really sets the mood for the entire album and his duets with the female vocalists are remarkable. I think this album has everything.
