"Lewd, Crued and Tattooed Live"
Released: 2001, Motley Records/Beyond/EMI
If you didn’t know by now, Motley Crue are one of my all time fav bands! Some of you don’t get the appeal, perhaps because you were not listening to metal in the 80’s or perhaps some of you find the Crue a tad too much on the “rock” side. Either way, this band will always mean something special to me and they are “heavy” enough for me to include here in Metal-Rules.com.
Recorded like in Salt Lake City on July 5, 2000 during the Maximum Rock Tour, the live gig here has an excellent sharp picture and the sound is perfect. Vince Neil’s voice sounds really good live, something that I’ve noticed is not always a constant with live Crue! Some people always rag on Vince saying he’s this or that or overweight…well fuck that. I like him just the way he is and without him the magic that is Motley Crue would NOT exist!!! The selection of songs here are perfect, even if some of them are a bit too typical. I guess there are some songs the band HAS to play or a riot might ensue. I would of liked to hear more from the SHOUT AT THE DEVIL album then “Looks The Kill” and the title track. How about some “Red Hot” or “Knock ‘Em Dead Kid”?? “Piece of Your Action” from the band’s first album, TOO FAST FOR LOVE, was a cool addition but again where’s “On With The Show”, “Take Me To The Top” or that album’s title track? As you can tell I still get off on the material from the first two albums the most. From THEATER OF PAIN, the only track played live is the smash hit “Home Sweet Home” featuring one of Mick Mars’ best and most memorable solos!! Other highpoints on the DVD include the live version of new songs like “Punched In The Teeth By Love” which sounds very much like classic Crue to me along with the song “Hell On High Heels.” It’s too bad the band didn’t get to record something for a DVD before Tommy left or for that matter before Randy had to step down due to illness. That said, fill-in drummer Samatha Maloney does surprisingly well. Who knew someone in Hole had talent eh? She smokes on the drums and if she ever becomes a permanent member of the Crue, I wouldn’t mind at all!
Of course a review wouldn’t be complete with some amount of criticism. One negative thing I can say about this live performance is that the new back-up vocalists don’t hold a candle to the ones from the DR. FEELGOOD tour referred to as the “Nasty Habits.” Sure these new back-up singers/dancers gives us guys something to drool over and their vocals are not that bad, but it smacks of CHEESE in a big way. Especially when they come to the front of the stage during “Girls, Girls, Girls” to wiggle their asses. One other small thing that was kinda strange was that the few places on the DVD where some bimbo hauls her top up to shake her titties at the Crue (or camera) was blurred out. What’s with that? Don’t tease us with blurred out breasts. Either show them or don’t show it at all because it reeks of censorship – something I’m sure the members of the Crue must of hated as well!!!
Anyway, I’ve rambled on long enough about this DVD. If you like the Crue at all then you’re going to love the DVD. Don’t buy the DVD for it’s bonus features though. The behind the scenes stuff is unfortunately not very in depth at all!!!! The un-earthed track “Who Wants To Be Lonely” is however a gem even if it doesn’t sound much like the Crue because it was recorded only a few days after they had formed. Long live the Crue!!!!!
