With Echoes in the Movement of Stone
June 2009
Released: 2009, Relapse
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Alan Gilkeson

The term Post-Metal must go! It conveys the idea 'after Metal' and this is far from the truth. I'll take the 'Avant-Garde Metal' moniker because that's what Chicago's experimental Metal band Minsk create. They're atmospheric and moody, mixing super psychedelic Post Rock with muscle and power.

Comparisons are easy to make here, simply because the genre makes it easy to point to Neurosis, Isis, even Helmet, but they're not fair. WITH ECHOES IN THE MOVEMENT OF STONE cements Minsk as a leader in the Avant-Garde style. They're very emotional lyrically and vocally and they bury it under what some call their 'wall of sound', creating a dynamic of beauty and darkness, and if you really try to focus the music in your mind, it's like an LSD trip sans the LSD.

Most of the album is a switching and melding of hypnotic and aggressive passages, but their are some standouts. The opener "Three Moons" is a sonic percussion driven onslaught, and probably the best vocal on the album. "Pisgah" is my favorite track with some really neat sound effects, and while it's a bit heavy I found it to be the most transcendental for me. I'm giving this baby a 3.5 but reserving the right to call it a 4.0, it seems to be one of those things that can grow on you.
