for more details. This is a good a time as any to do my bi-annual, quick, regional round-up of releases from Alberta Metal bands. Even though not all of these bands may be competing in WMB, I’d like to thank the bands who provided review copies for me for my radio show and Metal-Rules.com. The bands are Armifera, Black Pestilence, Bloated Pig, Enemyus, Exit Strategy, Ides Of Winter, Kataplexis, Misanthropy, Scythia, Throne Of Vengeance, Trollband, Vile Insignia and Villainizer. Please feel free to check out the other reviews in this feature.
Misanthropy is a side-project of James Neil (aka Dr. Killgore) of Gales Of Avalon. He and some of buddies got together watched some crappy 80’s horror movies, started jamming and suddenly Misanthropy was born. I’m sure copious amounts of weed and beer and 80’s VHS tapes went into the recording sessions. The boys camp up with enough material for a pair of EP’s which they released simultaneously. Take that Guns ‘n Roses! This review covers the CAMP ARAWAK EP.
This five song EP is inspired by and based on the 1983 horror film Sleepaway Camp. Everything, from the lyrics, the liner notes, the album cover all relate to that great piece of film. There are even still shots from the film in the booklet. There are, of course, samples from the movie on the album. Musically, the quartet is very competent, a really nice and well-produced blend of death/thrash. You don’t need to be a huge fan of the movie to enjoy the tunes, which are solid falling in a classic early 90’s Death sound with some hints of melody.
The danger, if it can be labeled as such, is that if a band like Misanthropy (or any band) choose to define themselves as a bit of joke it may limit the broader appeal. I’m on the fringes of the in-joke so I get it but many people may not see the humour. However, the band doesn’t care, they did it for fun and for themselves only. If people like it great, if not, too bad. If you like horror based metal, then check out Misanthropy!
