Mind's Eye
A Gentleman’s Hurricane
April 2008
Released: 2007, Lion Music/Zink Music
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Back to follow up 2006’s WALKING ON H20 is the Swedish trio Mind’s Eye. The bio labels the music as progressive metal, but it sounds more like heavy and technical rock. Yes, it’s progressive, but it’s not metal in any way. As always when it comes to any kind of progressive music, it takes a while to get the hang of it and this album is no exception.

Most of the 13 songs include various tempo changes, skilled guitar playing and very long songs. Mia Coldheart from Crucified Barbara joins Novak on vocals for a duet in the ballad “The Hour of Need”. I have nothing against the material, but it’s not really my cup of tea to sit and listen to 80 minutes of prog. The songs can’t stand by themselves and you really have to dig deep into the booklet to figure out what the story of this concept album is about. There’s nothing in the music to grabs you; the more I listen to the album the more irritated I am by it. The songs are sometimes hard to separate from each other and when you stop the album you can’t remember what you’ve just listened to

When it comes to the production I think Flores has done a great job and he’s worked hard on it. He’s created a grand and epic musical landscape where every musician has their place to shine. Flores definitely knows how to produce and I’m really impressed by his work.

Perhaps this is an album for all you prog rock lovers out there, but it didn’t do anything for me. The album has a few good songs and the production is flawless, but that can’t save an entire album. For the loyal fan there’s a comic book and a making of DVD when you buy the album.
