It was about a year ago that I was introduced to this band at Metal Meltdown III. I picked up their demo and reviewed it. I won’t go into details about their first release, YOU FIRST, but you can look up my review in the Cd Review Archive. BLACK PRINT is a 3 song demo that includes 2 new songs and a re-recording of “Drown” from the YOU FIRST disc. There has also been a lineup change since the release of YOU FIRST, with the band now consisting of Tina Neal (vocals), Dana Gautier (drums), Carla Chacon (guitar) and newest member Lily Olive (bass). Oh yeah, in case you haven’t already gone back and looked at their first Cd review, you now know that Mimic are 4 girls.

As already mentioned, the Cd opens with a re-recording of “Drown” that originally appeared on the YOU FIRST disc. This is definitely an improvement over the original with a much thicker and fuller sound. The vocals are also more refined and fit the song much better. Amazing how less than a year can change a song. “Divide” is a melancholy and dark plodding track that like most of Mimic’s material is full of pain and sad emotion. The final track is “Hollow Spirit Empty.” This is a much more aggressive tune that leans a little too much toward a modern sound that unfortunately covers up the uniqueness that Mimic are trying to achieve. Overall, a pretty good release. Mimic write catchy, albeit short, songs that are strong and drenched with emotion. This disc is an immersion in pain that should be enjoyed by any who are into the more groove oriented side of the metal spectrum.
