Warriors of the Black Sun
March 2009
Released: 2009, Darkest Empire
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Mr. Rock

Mictlantecuhtli was formed in 1999 in Los Angeles, CA and on this, their second disc, the band have managed to creatively combine genres, ultimately giving them a rather unique sound. Promoted as Aztec metal, (Mictlantecuhtli was the Aztec god of death, who ruled in the restful and silent kingdom of the dead, Mictlan), and with Aztec pseudonyms the band’s edge comes from combining black metal with thrash, and a little death thrown in for good measure.

Right from the opening strains of “Night of Sorrow”, which has an intro that could have been taken right from Metallica (you know, back in the day when they were actually a cool band), vocalist Temoc shines through. His black metal screeching is somewhat reminiscent of Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth), though there is more warmth (black metal warmth) to his voice. His voice is really quite evil. The guitar duo of Cuitlanhuac and Mixcoatl is a tight one with their death metal riffing. On “The Warriors’ Desire”, they actually show a little NWOBHM influence, which fits in quite nice actually. “Ancient War Call” also has a few Maiden-isms, though it doesn’t come across as mimicking, or copy the style. Iron Maiden is a major influence to so many bands that it’s obvious the style will show up in other bands. It’s not a bad thing, as long as they don’t blatantly copy. Mictlantecuhtli doesn’t copy, they do however show their influences.

The production on the disc, though not stellar, is sufficient to show the power of the band. A little more bottom end would be nice though. Bassist Tlaloc is kinda removed from the equation. A little more ‘oomph’ and this would be a more powerful disc. I like to packaging here as well. It shows me (the listener) that the band cares about the product they are releasing.

Melodic and catchy, I really like this band, and I really like WARRIORS OF THE BLACK SUN, but man, they gotta change the band name. From a reviewers point of view, it’s a bitch to type…

Mictlantecuhtli are definitely a band to watch.
