System Subversion
September 2014
Released: 2014, Self Released
Rating: 2.0/5
Reviewer: UK Team

After picking up the new Methedras album: SYSTEM SUBVERSION, I was looking forward to hearing a good mix of Death and Thrash Metal. I enjoy both these genres immensely and I would presume putting them together would create something mind blowing.

But it seems I was wrong, particularly in how opening track ‘Subversion’ seems all over the place. Breakdowns thrown in where they aren’t necessary, the vocals sound a bit too Deathcore and a guitar solo is thrown in when I thought the song had finished. It feels like the Italian thrashers were low on ideas and decided to write a song showcasing their wide range of talent, but it comes across as clunky and not very catchy.

‘You Got It’ and ‘Deathocracy’ are slightly more memorable with the group’s shouted choruses reminding me of many good drinking songs and punk rock tunes. It would be appropriate to describe it as a slower Municipal Waste or mixing DRI with Obituary. The sound does have its thrashy elements, like the drum based openings and lyrics of anguish and blind rage, but it doesn’t appeal as a very angry and vicious release. You can be very vicious at a slower than regular pace but these guys only seem halfway there.

By the time I’d reached ‘Shit Happens’ and ‘Brawl’ a lot of the songs sounded very similar, and I was getting bored. I think the band found that signature sound for this release by the end of the album but it feels like an off day for the Italian outfit. If you like catchy thrash metal then the choruses of this album will feel good, but I can’t say this is as memorable as a release by Tankard or Shock Troopers. Methedras certainly have it all there to be a good thrash metal band – this release though, it not one of their better ventures. Go back to the drawing board guys and see if you can come up with something angrier – I know you can do it.
