Magister Dixit
Maze of Thousand Ways
April 2013
Released: 2013, PRC Music Rating: 5.0/5 Reviewer: Metal-Rules.com UK Team Magister Dixit is not only one of the best black metal acts to hail from Canada, but also one of the first, emerging back in the 90’s and it’s great they are back…with a vengeance! Since their last release back in 2007, they are now back, with a new line up and new outlook on their music with sound and direction this is one album that needs to be heard! Starting off with weird and strange sounds, screams, growls this reminded me more of a horror film soundtrack than an actual album, but the guitars and other instruments soon kicked in with the second track ‘Maze of Thousand Ways’ exploding into the depths and pits of traditional black metal! There is so much going on here it’s hard to make out exactly what is being played, but all fuse into an amazing sound with harsh vocals breaking off into clean vocals at times, which do some slightly like Shagrath; Dimmu Bogir [old] at times, and some elements of Belphegor too, all of which is not a bad thing! There are also some surprising twists and turns in the tracks with this album, having a dark theatrical atmosphere throughout. The musicianship and production is great, but still holds the cold and depressing black metal sounds perfectly. Drums and Blast beats are incredible, with great guitaring throughout, and there are some tracks where you can clearly hear the bass stand out too. Every track is unique and includes some acoustic pieces to break up the album nicely. The music is fast and furious and certainly not for the faint hearted. Definitely one for true black metal fans, such as Marduk, Mork Gryning, Emperor, Naglfar, etc This is one album that I’m playing on repeat and will be part of my personal collection! The band quotes; ‘Will you dare to enter the maze?’ Mate, I’d happily get lost here and never leave! Review by Jo Blackened ![]()
