Million Dollar Reload
A Sinner's Saint
August 2012
Released: 2012, Frontiers Records
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Erich

The quantity and quality of ass kicking sleaze, boogie rock, and glam metal releases has been amazing over the last year and half. From great AC/DC influenced bands like Spain’s 77 and the Scandinavian quality releases of Crazy Lixx and Reckless Love, to the unexpected triumph of Trixter’s latest, it is a great time to be a metal fan. Belfast, Ireland’s Million Dollar Reload has been around since about 2008 but this is my first taste of the band. Not surprisingly, they have been scooped up for their pivotal second album by Frontiers Records, a label that has rapidly made its way into my own top 5 of personal favorites.

The band has done their homework, studiously absorbing the influences of Aerosmith and AC/DC, combining that with American glam and sleaze, and then topping it off with the modernized inflections of Scandinavian sleaze. On a first cursory listen, you have a band that sounds primarily like Crazy Lixx and Hardcore Superstar. Dig deeper though, and the differences begin to surface like on the Tesla-like ballad “Broken”. Never fear, there is plenty of grooving rockers to sink your teeth into, such as the excellent “Bullets in the Sky”, with its hooky chorus and the boogie bounce of “Blown Away”. Like most good bands in this genre, Million Dollar Reload knows how to construct a groove and melody coupled with memorable and fun choruses.

Complementing the strong song writing is an equally worthy production that captures the songs with clarity while retaining some soul and warmth. Front man Phil Conlon, has the swagger and cocksure attitude needed to deliver authenticity to these songs and convince you to have a good time. This is definitely summer time music, built with a sunny day in mind with nary a minor key in sight. Throw it in the car and let it play, because it is that worthy. Sure this is no reinvention, and A SINNER’S SAINT is an album that would never make that claim. Bottom line, if you love Hardcore Superstar, Crazy Lixx and other glam/sleaze bands then take the plunge with Million Dollar Reload. You are guaranteed to have a good time.
