Midnight Priest
Rainha Da Magia Negra (mini-CD)
March 2010
Released: 2009, Stormspell Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Portuguese heavy metal band Midnight Priest likes black magic, occult and women. And I would add early Maiden and Priest to the same pile of interests as well. These 5 Portuguese defenders of heavy metal have been around only since 2008, and recorded one 5-track demo (titled THE PRIEST IS BACK, limited to 400 copies) in 2009.

The band´s latest recording, a 6-track EP called RAINHA DA MAGIA NEGRA, is a solid slap of decent sounding, old school heavy metal that borrows a thing or two from both Maiden´s and Priest´s directions, too. The guys have a good grip on things on this EP, and one can tell right away that we are talking about long term fans of Maiden/Priest as far as some musical likings of these fellows are concerned. Their music is kind of simple, straightforward but all around catchy and hook-filled heavy metal that undoubtedly gets some attention among the heavy metal people. Vocals are sung in their native language Portuguese, and they sound more okay-ish than disturbing by any means. It´s just that at first you need to get used to his vocals a little bit before you fully accept them as a part of their sound. The guy behind the artist name ´The Priest´ is a good vocalist for the style they do; he can sing in a somewhat decent way even if he probably does not have the widest range vocally. The 80s spirit and vibe are both involved in Midnight Priest´s sound, and I can hardly complain personally. ;o)

Again, Stormspell Records has done something good for the underground metal scene, Midnight Priest´s EP replenishing nicely their whole roster of releases. I guess you may want to check them out?
