Memory Garden
Memory EP / Tides
June 1997
Released: 1997, Heathendoom Music
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: EvilG

Memory Garden are one of Sweden's best kept metal secrets. I recently had the pleasure to listen to their CD's Forever and the latest Tides. There is very little difference between the two CD's and it seems that in the future the Forever EP should be contained on a digi-pack version of the full length Tides."

It is of no surprise that this band was asked to open for bands like Morganna Lefay and Mercyful Fate because Memory Garden play with the same melodic convictions as their fellow Scandinavian cohorts. Unfortunately the timing was wrong for the band and these amazing opportunities passed them by.

On the two CD's I've listened to, MG opt for a slow doomy style topped off with a powerful resonant and amazingly clear vocals. The vocalist is perhaps the most outstanding element of MG. This makes the music sound like a crossover between European bands like Morganna Lefay, Helloween and Mercyful Fate to the more doom laden sounds of the black/death scene.

The Forever EP contains four songs: Warlord, Inarticulo Mortis, Forever, and Autumn Anguish. The newest MG CD, Tides was released in early 1997 and has the following tracks: Genesis, Dream Horizons, The Rhyme of the Elder, Trapped at the Pharaoes, Judgement Day, The Innocent Sleep, A New Dawn, and Blissful.

The Tides CD is licensed for South America on the Brazilian label Hellion Records (this version will contain the Forever EP). In the US this release is distributed by BrainTicket Rds & Abyss Prod. At the present the band are playing for cities like Sundsvall, Stockholm, Hallsberg, Mora, and Göteborg in Sweden and with luck they plan on performing in Germany in the very near future.
