This career spanning collection from one of Metal’s biggest bands is sure to satisfy. Put together with the help and guidance of Mustaine himself. Done chronologically all aspects and bases are covered so you, the fan can see hear the band from the beginning to the present. Included are many unreleased goodies and live tracks to make this even the better. Add in the fact that the sound has been remastered……

Disc One covers the first four albums which are what many consider essential releases to own. The sound quality here is exceptional and everything is near perfect. While I personally have not listened to my old ‘deth albums for sometime I was surprised when I heard the songs on here. They sounded good but not totally as I remembered. Some of these have been remixed to sound better by Dave. While I can agree to a certain extent in wanting to make the albums sound better but once the album is released you should never go back and remix it. A remaster is fine to make the product clearer is fine but rerecording and remixing is a tragedy. Some of this is a complete horror to the ears for those that grew up with a heavy dose of Megadeth in their daily diet. The most massive difference is on “Into The Lungs Of Hell”, there are horns way up in the mix. It seems as tho Mustaine is going for the Sgt. Pepper era Beatles here.

After the first half of Disc Two is where my familiarity with the band begins to taper off. COUNTDOWN TO EXTINCTION was the last of my following for awhile. The live tracks are a real treat for those of us who have never had the pleasure of seeing the band live. This was possibly the strongest lineup the band ever had. The live tracks are great to hear but a full release would be more welcomed by hardcore fans.

The third disc offers one live song, more album cuts and some unreleased. This is a decent disc for an older fan who lost track of the band for a few years. Interesting to hear the changes and what went on during this period in their career.

Disc number four is a real gem; a full concert from 1990. Showcasing the band at its best around the time of RUST IN PEACE. The band just belts out the classics and give the audience a great introduction to the new album cuts. This almost makes the set worth the price.

The DVD is a nice addition BUT it would have been better for a full show. Was this even filmed in it’s entirety? Where is the rest of it? The sound is decent and picture is pretty clear. Maybe the future holds another release of the full show? One can wish.

Overall a fantastic box for the casual fan, a half decent one for the hardcoore fan that wants everything they ever recorded. Apart for the remixing of the classic cuts this is a great set that shows the evolution of one of Metal’s Big 3.
