Rust In Peace Live (DVD)
September 2010
Released: 2010, Shout! Factory
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: Robert Williams

Recorded this past March 31st in front of a sold out audience at the legendary Hollywood Palladium venue, comes RUST IN PEACE LIVE documenting the final night of Megadeth's immensely successful Rust In Peace twentieth anniversary tour.

Available on both DVD and BluRay formats and also released as a live in concert CD, RUST IN PEACE LIVE showcases Megadeth performing the entire RUST IN PEACE album in its entirety. The picture and sound quality is amazing, really breathtaking to behold. I'm starting to question whether or not all future metal releases should seek eventual BluRay treatment.

The stage is dressed in a warehouse environment, with prop boxes that have "Keep Dry" "This Side Up" and "Top Secret" printed on them, laying the perfect atmosphere for rusted goodness like "Hangar 18" where Dave Mustaine and Chris Broderick work as absolute magic as a guitar tandem. Shawn Drover's bass drums are complete with yellow and black toxic waste symbols and there is a large silk screened backdrop of the Rust In Peace album cover. Flashing stage lights beam green and red, blue and yellow and light up your screen as if you were there.

The audience participation is rabid. The general admission venue has amassed a sea of headbangers, fervently moshing and singing along to their favorite numbers. One such fan can be witnessed singing along complete with a bloody nose. Dedication all around. As part of the bonus features you also get footage of Megadeth fans excitedly lining up in droves and offering their thoughts on the band. Meanwhile, you get backstage footage of the crew working on the set and a brief albeit awesome bit of rehearsal footage, shot in what appears to be a small backstage hospitality room. I wish I could see a whole DVD's worth of that.

There really is no fucking around in the stage banter dept. As the band steps on-stage Dave addresses the audience "You all know why we're here right?" and that is the last you will hear from him between songs until "And that was Rust In Peace!" at the end.

In what was somewhat of a strange move, the last quarter of the concert has been separated and appears under the "Bonus" content. There you will find various other classic such as "In My Darkest Hour", "Symphony of Destruction" and "Peace Sells" to name a few.

I was really satisfied with RUST IN PEACE LIVE on compact disc, but it just doesn't get any better than having this release on BluRay. This is actually as perfect as a live metal DVD can ever get. For that I give it an exceptionally flawless rating.
