Martyr AD
On Earth As It Is In Hell
April 2004
Released: 2004, Victory Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Lord of the Wasteland

ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HELL is Martyr AD’s Victory Records debut. Since their last record, THE HUMAN CONDITION IN TWELVE FRACTIONS, the band has changed vocalists and drummers with a surprisingly smooth result. An upheaval like that can often sink a band, but Martyr AD has actually come back stronger. The band is a mix of metalcore and thrash with punishing riffs and drums. The band actually toured with Swedish thrash-meisters, The Haunted, and that influence has definitely rubbed off.

“Bring Out Your Dead” (insert Monty Python reference here) is a brutal track with Andy Hart demonstrating exactly what got him the vocalist job. The Johnson brothers’ riffs are all over this track and make it the best on the disc. “American Hollow” dishes out some rigorous double bass drumming courtesy of newcomer Karl Hensel and bassist Tara Anderson follows along perfectly. Usually the last thing used to describe a metalcore record is the riffs, but indeed they are all over this record. Melody is maintained while razor-sharp riffs and shredding populates nearly ever track. The rhythm section of Anderson and Hensel keep a tight backing to the riffs with chugging grooves and impressive fills.

The Victory Records roster is getting stacked with young talent in the metalcore front. Snapcase, Scars of Tomorrow and Premonitions of War are now joined by Martyr AD as some of the best bands of this genre. ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HELL is full of punchy riffs and excellent vocals that will appeal to any metal fan. Check ‘em out!
