Mass Extinction
Creation's Undoing
April 2009
Released: 2008, Underground Movement
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

Gary Holt from Exodus isn´t a liar. I mean, as far as his opinion about the Irish thrashers Mass Extinction is concerned anyway. Mass Extinction may well be the best Irish thrash metal act although Gama Bomb are pretty hard to beat. However, you be the judge after giving a fair chance to the Mass Extinction troops to make an invasion and thrash your home helter-skelter. In all honesty, this is the kind of old school thrash metal that is a real enjoyment to listen to. Mass Extinction´s thrash - apart being very ´80s influenced, is very riff-based, and whenever those tastefully done, heavy riffs come and hit you, you somehow start feeling an urgent need to check the credits of the CD where on earth they come from again? Yes, from Dublin, Ireland indeed.

All 3 songs on this band´s 2nd demo (or EP, whatever you wanna call it), are over 5 minutes in length, but they are very well-executed thoroughly and never have a dull moment in them at all. And it´s not all about the great thrash riffs that carry these songs on; everything clicks nicely into the right places (the drums, the vocals, the leads etc.) and the final outcome of this product just screams to be heard and enjoyed at maximum volumes, preferably with an ice-cold beer in your hand. Tom Cunningham, who is responsible for the lead vocal parts in the band, sounds deceptively like Mem von Stein (that Exumer/Sun Descends fame) - and the backing vocals parts that they use a lot behind these 3 songs, have been done carefully, kind of like to make sure they not only bring enough of the needed ´80s thrash vibe into them, but also fit well and painlessly into the songs as well. And here comes a news flash: They do. Da-daa...!

There´s lots of ´bayarea-ism´ as well as a good load of early German thrash and Sepultura´s BENEATH era in Mass Extinction´s beautifully churned out thrash metal, so one should know what to expect from them based on the aforementioned description of the sound of these fine Irish thrash heroes. So if you want your world to be beaten a little bit by them, I´m sure you won´t regret it afterwards after once inviting this promising Irish thrash act in to your household.
