Malicious Death
... From Above (promo)
September 2009
Released: 2009, Self-released
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: Luxi Lahtinen

The beer drinking and big-bellied Finnish thrashers Malicious Death have arranged a barbecue party again, after 3-4 years of absence in the recording department anyway.

This latest 3-song offering from these irresistibly thrashing Finns Malicious Death, … FROM ABOVE, is a promotional release, made for record companies basically – and it also introduces the band´s new vocalist G.G. as a new front man of the band, who was chosen for their line-up from amongst many candidates that more or less failed to impress the band to become the kind of singer that they were looking for.

Based on the 3 songs Malicious Death have recorded for this promotional release, G.G. sounds good with his harsh, raw and a bit hardcore-ish vocals. He probably isn´t the most diverse sounding thrash vocalist out there, but his vocal style fits relatively perfectly to Malicious Death´s strongly old-school reeking speed/thrash metal, which is the only thing that matters really, I think.

The opener, “Death by Dawn”, is a neck-breaking, full-speed-ahead thrasher that most thrash fans want to hear. Great song all in all with some wicked soloing in it, too. Next song, “Thrash till Death”, is what the song title already promises loud and clearly. It´s a mid-paced song with both some good riff and solo work in it – and its sort of early Whiplash/Metallica/Destruction-tinged vibe in it will surely appeal most of us old-school thrash fans.

The last song, “… From Above”, brings Voivod immediately to my mind with its crunchy, horizon-painting and melodic guitar parts in it, and the song itself rivals in catchiness with any Malicious Death songs that they have recorded thus far. I seriously think this is one of their most carefully composed and thought-out songs that they have managed to put together during the band´s existence. Good for them, I think.

With the material this strong I firmly have every reason to believe we do not have to wait for the next Malicious Death album for that long anymore. Let´s just wish the signs of the stars are more favorable to them this time around though.
