This is the third album to be released by German one-man black metal project Lebensnacht, and on first listen it stands out as a homage to Mayhem and Burzum. The opening track Erwacht with its slow introduction, spoken word, raw sounding guitars and minimal approach make it typical of atmospheric black. On the second track Blutmeer, the synth sound and style strongly echo Burzum's "Rundtgåing av den transcendentale egenhetens støtte".

Despite this clear influence in the beginning of the album the music becomes more variable as it progresses. An array of additional effects melded into the soundscape accentuate the dynamic range created by the instruments. The use of rain, running water, wind and sea samples scattered through the album play to its theme of isolation and despair. The fourth track Traszendenz drags us in with a slow, simple guitar riff, intermittent distortion and a clear, melancholic piano. Erkenntnis begins with drawn out pulsation followed by the introduction of a stringed passage and after a final increase in energy, the listener is sent into the dejection of final track, Ende.

This album shows a slight lack of originality but overall it is well written and the production is good. I enjoyed the minimalistic approach to the album's construction, the vocals convey a range of emotion and they are interweaved through this ethereal ambience that captivates the listener. I don't know much about Lebenenacht but after hearing this album and making it part of my atmospheric collection, I'm intrigued...
