Scare Force One
November 2014
Released: 2014, AFM Records
Rating: 3.5/5
Reviewer: Erich

Yes, 2006 was a long time ago and folks still remember Lordi’s Eurovision success. It is almost an obligatory acknowledgement that opens scores of Lordi album reviews, and now I too am guilty of it. But the important point to take from that opening is that Lordi is still going strong, even if the hoped for success the band intended to ride to North American fame never panned out after “Hard Rock Hallelujah.” SCARE FORCE ONE continues the band’s comically bad trend of daft named albums, but the music is still pretty catchy.

The instrumental opening and following title track are decent, but the album first grabbed my attention on track 3, “How To Slice A Whore”, an irresistible driver with a quintessential Lordi gang vocal chorus. “Hell Sent In The Clowns” and “She’s A Demon” contains Lordi’s patented mix of horror keyboards with simple and direct metal riffs. There are more modern sounds on the album, with a powerful production providing added punch. The album has some connecting elements, but moves away from the theme/story template of their past albums. At the end of the day though, this is no great departure from previous albums, which is obviously a good thing for die-hard Lordi fans.

Lordi fans know what to expect, and SCARE FORCE ONE delivers, with no bad songs but also no anthemic classics either. SCARE FORCE ONE’s only real flaw is that the mid-paced Lordi formula is stretched across 13 songs, which for me made it a tough slog to make from start to finish without respite. Still, there are enough meaty and memorable songs to warrant spending some time with SCARE FORCE ONE. SCARE FORCE ONE is definitely a must pickup, for the band’s fans, and not a bad place to wade into the Lordi pool for first time adventurers.
