Lust Of Decay
Kingdom Of Corpses
May 2005
Released: 2005, Comatose Music Rating: 3.5/5 Reviewer: Gabriel C. Zolman Comatose Music are an excellent up n’ coming Death Factory of sorts—this reviewer in particular was surprised to see what a thriving, violent scene the Carolinas held. This is an Appalachian avalanche of demonic thrust. The label’s collective roster could easily spell death in CAPTIAL LETTERS to every toothless Bluegrass hick, county to county, far and wide. Lust Of Decay, a flagship band of sorts for the label, is exemplary of what the label offers to those stuck in the sticks. LOD remember when Death Metal was heavy. This is simply vicious, vile, and vitriolic, and no other words apply. Oh…wait—how about “sick fucking bastards”? Yeah, that works, too. They have songs like “Crustacean Masturbation” (complete with hilarious sample) and “Arachnid Anal Infestation,” so you pretty much know what to expect. Actually, it rises above this, more often than not. The vocals on “Septic Tank Abortion” are among the most extreme I’ve ever heard—and I own nearly all the Kataklysm discs, alright? The drums are in your face, and the aggression is well beyond the standard basement growler. The rhythm section is unfathomably tight—easily up to par with bands like Origin and Jungle Rot, even if they are not afforded the posh-ass mix job those other bands are gifted with. Lust Of Decay do more with less, and make it work by sheer adrenaline, determination, and musicianship…even if they did include yet another clichéd Hellraiser sample. “Predatory Instincts” and “Cognitive Decimation” both have great, chugging rhythm parts, reminiscent of the classic Florida scene. The rise of bands such as Blood Red Throne, Bloodbath, Blood Ritual, and other “blood” themed bands with roots in Classic Death, can only help a band like this. (It is of note that the disc features a cover of Deicide’s “Lunatic Of God’s Creation,” which is actually heavier than the original.) This isn’t groundbreaking by any means. It’s by-the-numbers Brutal Death, and follows the formula like a chalk outline around a corpse. And you know what? The fans won’t care; this reviewer didn’t. You either love this or you don’t. Brutal Death fans sick to Satan of Cannibal Corpse and Six Feet Under will soil themselves for this—it’s well produced, and ill-conceived in the best possible way. Is it all a bit juvenile? Sure…so pick up some generic cola and Pop Rocks while you’re out. This will rock the sick fucker beneath your “respectable metalhead” veneer.
