Loser
Just Like You
May 2006
Released: 2006, Island Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Celtic Bob

Former David Lee Roth and Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5 releases an incredibly solid disc of 11 brand new originals. Despite playing with the likes of Roth, Manson, Halford,…and countless others John5 remains relatively unknown. With the formation of this band he is set out to change this and make himself more well known.

The first single from this album is a mid tempo track called “Nobody Knows”. It’s borderline between ballad and rocker. With it’s acoustic guitar and melodic groove you can’t help but really dig the tune, it kicks in slightly for the chorus. Vocally Joe has a bit of the Pop-Punk vocal sound happening but not so prominent that it ruins the song and makes it sound like something on today’s trendy Rock radio station.

Almost halfway into the disc we hit the heaviest song on the disc; “Disposable Sunshine”. This song alone ranks up there with SLAVE TO THE GRIND era Skid Row in just the sheer heaviness and attitude. If the whole disc was like this then every Metal fan would be all over it like a can of beans. This track is pure Metal.

The catchiest track on the album is clearly “Girl Like You”. It has an industrial edge coupled with serious drum beats. Vocally Joe sounds a bit angry and the vocal effect works really well. John uses some really cool guitar effects here as well to make this one awesome track. “By My Side” is a killer ballad and is destined for massive airplay. Great vocals, cool guitar and just an overall great melodic groove.

A great Hard rock record that should put John5 at the top.

Since the writing of the review for this disc Loser has been dropped by Island and the release status of the CD is unknown.
