Lorenguard
Eve of Corruption-The Days of Astasia:Part One
February 2012
Released: 2011, Independent
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Waspman

I know my esteemed colleague JP did an excellent job covering this album in last month`s batch of reviews (January 2012), but the guys in the band were kind enough to send me a copy of their album, so I figured I`d add some extra coverage.

Lorenguard is a new band out of the United States that seems destined to make their mark with an epic power-metal sound that is reminiscent of Rhapsody (of Fire) but without that band’s ridiculous excesses. So yes, we’re dealing with keyboard/guitar interplay, huge vocals, fantasy themes and images, but most of all, some top of the line song writing. Seriously strong, speedy power metal is the order of the day, and the band has packed EVE OF CORRUPTION with ten incredible songs that will have you head banging and singing along within seconds of hitting “play”. I really can’t find fault with the music at all, except for maybe some dragging parts in the lone ballad, “Embrace”.

As you might have guessed from the title, the album is a concept album with an original story written by drummer Brady Sadler. In fact, there is a forthcoming novel as well. Some may say that’s over the top, but I say it’s a sign of a band dedicated to their craft, willing to do anything to bring their world to life. Indeed, the amount of effort this independent band has put into this thing is truly impressive – the packaging, booklet, production values, and presentation are leagues better than well-established bands.

I wish I had heard this album when it was released last year (a big “F YOU!” to the snail mail system) because these easily would have been in my top 10 of the year.

Look, it’s simple. Do you like fantasy-themed power metal? If so, welcome to your new favourite band.
