Lipstick Liontigers
Aliens From Outer Space (They're Not of This Earth)
December 2011
Released: 2011, FLNG Records
Rating: 3.0/5
Reviewer: Aaron Yurkiewicz

Ok, so I had no idea what I was getting into when I got this promo. For those who may not be aware, Lipstick Liontigers are a Norwegian outfit who ham up the glam/power metal shtick in a way that makes Steel Panther look like Pink Fucking Floyd. Yes, it’s bizarre, over the top, ridiculous, and dare I say it – good? The band’s been absent from the music scene since 2004’s WITH THE FORCES OF POWER AND GLITTER AND GLAMOUR OF ROCK, but creative mainstays Screaming Eagle and Speedking are back to rock the masses again with a new platter of metal. Enter ALIENS FROM OUTER SPACE (THEY’RE NOT OF THIS EARTH). Yep.

Here’s the beauty of Lipstick Liontigers. If you weren’t familiar with the band’s ridiculousness and just pressed “play,” you’d be hard pressed to decide whether the tunes were intentionally this goofy or if it’s just what you’d expect from an 80’s inspired, Maiden-esque power metal band. Check the synth heavy homage to host of TV’s World’s Wildest Police Videos “Sheriff John Bunnell,” the Braveheart inspired “Fight for Freedom”, or the utterly singable closing title track. Each track is full of goofball lyrics delivered in such a convincing package that you find yourself totally wrapped up in it by the end.

The album clocks in around 30-minutes, which is both a positive and a negative. The positive is that the band doesn’t wear out their welcome and walks off stage before things get stale. The negative is that I’d still love to hear what else they’ve got up their sleeves. Lipstick Liontigers are a fun band and the album’s a good time. ALIENS FROM OUTER SPACE (THEY’RE NOT OF THIS EARTH) is available now through digital retailers.
