Lionville
A World Of Fools
April 2017
Released: 2017, Frontiers
Rating: 4.0/5
Reviewer: John Haseltine

After several years of playing the club scene, Italian songwriter/guitarist Stefano Lionetti took the advice of friends, fans and family and started a project which would become Lionville. Lionville got to work quickly by non-stop writing and touring. With two critically acclaimed albums under their belt in just two years, they managed to catch the attention of Frontiers Music who signed them to a multi-album deal.

It has been five years since their last release, but from what I am hearing, it was well worth the wait. The latest installment in the Lionville saga is titled, A WORLD OF FOOLS. And a fool you would be if enjoy this genre of music and have not yet given Lionville a listen. I may not be the biggest fan of melodic rock, but I am not against it. I do have my go to bands when in need of some mellower tunes. I can now add Lionville to that list.

Lionville musically have the melodic rock, AOR sound. At first listen, so many bands of yesteryear came to mind. They are right up there with the stylings and sounds of Toto, Richard Marx, Bad English, Survivor, and Boulevard. All bands that are highly regarded in the industry and with their new deal with Frontiers, maybe they will soon be lumped in with those greats. A WORLD OF FOOLS is no sleeper in the realm of melodic rock. This album has many moments of upbeat tracks. Just the fact that I find many of them to be very catchy is not necessarily a surprise to me, but on the other hand it is. The opener, “I Will Wait” is punchier out of the gates than I was to expect. From there, the album rolls through what one can take to be almost instant classics of the genre. “Paradise”, and the title track “A World of Fools” are a few of my favs, yet the whole album is one standout track after another. The vocal delivery by Lars Säfsund is exceptional if not accompanied by a bit of perfection throughout the album.

The musicianship and crafting of this album ranks right up there with the best of them. There is absolutely no reason why, if this is your style of music, you should not be listening to Lionville. Existing fans may have had a long, well worth it wait for this release, but you do not have to. It is here. Give it a spin today!
