Lillian Axe
Waters Rising
November 2007
Released: 2007, Locomotive Records/Sound Pollution
Rating: 5.0/5
Reviewer: Anders Sandvall

Lillian Axe has toured with acts like Ratt, Poison, Krokus, Stryper, and Lita Ford, so they’re not newcomers in the business. After 15 years it’s now time to release a new album called WATERS RISING.

On this album Lillian Axe sounds a lot like the now-dead act Talisman with melodic metal influenced by soul and funk. The music is really skillfully executed and lead singer LeFevre has huge vocal similarities to the Talisman singer Jeff Scott Soto. Lillian Axe manages to combine melodic metal with heavier guitar riffs and mean lead vocals. The band says that WATERS RISING represents the boiling-point factor of life that seems to be a tumultuous ride always on the brink of explosion. The songs on the album cover the different ways that we deal with this factor and the fact that everyone is trying to make sense of it.

All of the songs are great and there are actually no low points on the entire album. In fact it’s so even that it’s hard to pinpoint any favorite songs. A few that rise above the others are “Waters Rising”, “Antarctica”, “Become a Monster”, and “Fear of Time”. Those are edgier melodic metal tunes with great lead guitar parts. I’m not a fan of ballads but “I Have to Die, Goodbye” and “Until the End of the World” are two semi-acoustical tracks where LeFevre shows his emotional side and they really impress me. If you haven’t heard Lillian Axe before it’s time to discover them now. WATERS RISING was a pleasant surprise and it’s gonna be exciting to hear from these veterans in the future.
