Lillian Axe
Sad Day On Planet Earth
July 2009
Released: 2009, Blistering Records
Rating: 4.5/5
Reviewer: Alan Gilkeson

I didn't know what to expect from this disc, not having heard 2007's WATERS RISING and sort of having forgot about Lillian Axe. First thing I did before listening however is check the credits for a clue. If Steve Blaze is still writing the songs things have got to be just as good as the late 80's and early 90's. Lillian Axe probably would have been a lot bigger had they not come around so late. A few years earlier in the 80's and we may have said Lillian Axe in the same vain as GNR or any of the big hair bands, all of whom Lillian Axe was better than. Luckily Steve Blaze is still the band's driving force.

SAD DAY ON PLANET EARTH is chock full of great songs. It opens with an instrumental which I kind of didn't get, however 'MegaSlowFade' starts the album, a quick paced number with an awesome guitar riff and a bit of chugga chugga, rocks through some awesome start/stops. Mixed among the rockers are some really beautiful slow ballady songs, other times Pop Rock pieces, that are well crafted and tight, like 'Blood Raining Down on her Wings' and 'Within Your Reach'.

Steve Blaze is still a genius of the Pop Rock Riff and Derrick LeFevre has proven beyond doubt that he can not only replace Ron Taylor, but he can expand the Lillian Axe catalog seamlessly. Quite simply, this is an amazing record. It's going on my Ipod and will be playing in my house for quite some time.
